Meanings Behind The Different Cuts On Engagement Rings

Choosing engagement rings is often a task that asks a man to figure out exactly what kind of jewelry his partner likes to wear, even when he’d never otherwise taken notice of jewelry in his life.

The task is only marginally easier when both partners are involved, as different diamond cuts can significantly change how you feel about your ring. According to gemologist, Olivia Landau, different cuts say something different about the woman who chooses them.

For starters, even the classic cuts draw very distinct personalities to them. “[A round] cut is for someone who is drawn to a classic and timeless style,” Landau explained. “A round brilliant is perfect for someone who wants a traditional look that will last through the ages.”

On the other hand, if you’re looking for something that will really sparkle, your best bet would be to go for a princess cut, which is favored by celebs like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Hilary Duff.

If you want to exude elegance, Landau suggests heading for an emerald cut, which is a bit more understated than a round or princess cut. Even so, Beyonce’s engagement ring highlights the emerald cut.

Those brides to be who favor a trendier sort of look should follow in Kim Kardashian’s footsteps and opt for the cushion cut.  “A cushion’s curved corners and brilliant facets are perfect for someone searching for a soft look with a lot of sparkle,” Landau said.

Diamond cuts like the marquise cut and the pear cut are a little bit more unusual if you’re looking for something to set you apart from the crowd. While the marquise cut with its two pointed ends will help to elongate your hands, according to Landau, “Women who move to the beat of their own drum and don’t want a ring like everyone else gravitate toward a pear.”
