We often think of children as selfish. Their little brains are changing so rapidly, and it’s natural for them to think mostly of themselves. However, children can show an incredible amount of empathy and selflessness when given the chance, just like the children in these stories of wholesome moments and acts of kindness.

Dogs are man’s best friend, but sometimes things happen in their life that causes them to become fearful and defensive. This little girl, unfortunately, came across that kind of dog. Her brother sustained a lot of injuries, but he protected someone he loved, and there isn’t anything more wholesome than that. You are a great kid and will definitely go on to be a great friend and partner. The parents must have been so proud.

When you’re really little, going to school is scary. You’ve spent the first years of your life surrounded by your family, and suddenly you’re thrown into a new environment with both strange adults and strange kids. It can be tough to cope, but lucky for this little guy, he had a classmate looking out for him. Sure, a teacher could have helped, but it’s so much better to be shown by a peer that everything will be okay.

Growing older and pretending you don’t love your parents is a rite of passage for every single person on this planet. We all reach an age where it’s not cool to get too many hugs or to say “I love you” anymore, because we want to seem independent. It’s so refreshing to see a little boy who's 100% comfortable expressing his feelings, and on top of that, who stands up to people he disagrees with. If we were this mom, we would have been emotional too.

Family doesn’t always have to be blood. Family is often what you make it — whether it’s a great group of supportive friends, a friend’s family accepting you as their own, or bonding with your neighbors, as this kid did. There's so much raw emotion in that second photo that it could easily break anyone’s heart. This teenage boy, at an age where kids often don’t seem to care about anything, has clearly taken the time to build his own family with these neighbors.
